President's Message: April 2021

President's Message: April 2021

Greetings friends and colleagues,

I trust you enjoyed the recent long Easter weekend - I'm all refreshed for a busy April ahead!

Our first April gathering last Wednesday was a different take on our regular "Member Behind the Badge" evening.  It was a special night with several of us sharing our musical talents. Andrew McFarland and myself entertained with several songs by the Beatles and Neil Diamond, and the audience jumped in with some enthusiastic singing! David Shrimpton also featured his piano playing which he has been doing these last 3 years to improve his dexterity.

Next week (April 14) promises to be an eye-opening session on who lives, works and plays in Manningham. Join us as Vicki Martinez presents an interactive session on who makes up Manningham, what they do and what their needs are.  Vicki's use of evidence and local data will highlight the true facts of our municipality and open conversation on how we as Rotarians and community members can foster a thriving and resilient community.

On April 21, Chris Milne from Manningham Youth Services (MYS) will join us and share how they engage with our young people to help build skills, qualities and capabilities to create more sound pathways for a brighter and more optimistic future. MYS also provides support and assistance to parents, educators, community organisations and local businesses who regularly engage with young people.

We're really pleased to be able to resume our Schools Anzac Day Commemoration Service this year, albeit in a modified format. 25 local primary and secondary schools will be participating in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph at the Templestowe Memorial Reserve on April 22nd (each school will be represented by two students). This service has been a proud tradition with our club for over 30 years now, and you can find out more about this special event here.

On April 28, we will be taking a virtual trip "Around the World" through a Trivia Night. Everyone's welcomed to join in an evening of fun, frivolity and fellowship. The evening will feature trivia questions on Food, Music and Travel, and a 2 course dinner at the Manningham Club. Teams of six or eight and community guests are also most welcomed to join in the fun! (more details here).

Lastly, can I encourage everyone to visit the next Doncaster Hill Market on Sunday May 2. Come meet some of our local producers and businesses and try some of their products - Stella and I have so far enjoyed some beautiful pork, award-winning cheeses, farm-fresh eggs and veggies! Brian Tyedin also organises some great local entertainment to help bring our community together.

Keen on joining us for any of these events?  As always, everyone's welcomed to join in our fellowship and activities. Feel free to email Dan if you have questions or would like to make a booking.

Yours in Rotary,

Felix Wong
