President's Message: June 2021

President's Message: June 2021

Winter started off full of promise with a nice stretch of beautiful sunny days. How quickly things have changed!

With the recent outbreak, we’ve had to cancel the June Doncaster Hill Market and postpone the first leg of our Primary School Speech Competition. It’s back to Zoom meetings for now, though hopefully we’ll see some loosening of restrictions from next week onwards. I’m hopeful that we will be able to enjoy each other’s company during our Changeover celebration a month from now (July 3rd).

You would all be pleased to know that we delivered two iPads to Mannacare Aged Care just prior to the sudden lockdown. These devices give the residents the ability to stay in touch with their family and friends during this period, and kudos to Rod Simkiss and Graeme Cobb for their quick reaction to the changing circumstances and for expediting this.

Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of hearing from Grant Purdy, Chair of Manningham Inclusive Community Housing (MICH). MICH is doing some incredible work securing housing for young people with intellectual disabilities, as well as giving them the necessary skills and support to live independently in our community. At this meeting, we were joined by our friends from Rotary Doncaster and their namesake club from the UK, our first international guests for a while!

Next week (June 9), we can look forward to a very special “Member Behind The Badge” presentation, as we will be hearing from our incoming President Luke Bastian. It will be a good refresher for many of us, and we might even get a peek of what’s in store for the year ahead.

On Wednesday June 16, it will be a music-themed night with Peter Sullivan as our guest speaker. Many of you might know Peter as one half of the Two Man Band and their AFL anthem “Up There Cazaly”.  Aside from being an award-winning composer, he was musical director of Channel 9 for a while. We are hoping this will be an in-person meeting – will Peter bring his piano along and sing us a few tunes?

The week after (June 23), we will be joining a cluster evening with Kirsty Sword Gusmao as guest speaker. As you might be aware, Kirsty served as the First Lady of East Timor and was appointed an officer of the Order of Australia (AO). This promises to be an engaging evening and we welcome members of the community to join us.

Lastly, July 3 is Changeover Night for us, as we farewell The Three Musketeers and welcome Luke Bastian as our President. Despite the twists and turns of the last twelve months, we’ve grown and achieved so much as a club, and this will truly be an evening of celebration. Bookings are through www.trybooking.com/BRYPM - I hope to see you all there!

Yours in Rotary,
